How Long Does It Take to Learn How to Play the Guitar?
mickey asked:
I am 16 years old in grade 11. I really want to learn how to play an instrument, (i have played piano, violin and baritone in the past) especially the guitar. I am a fairly quick learner. Would it be worth learning, or will it be a long time before I am able to play anything worth playing? Thanks :)

It kinda depends on what style of music you want to play and how much time you spend each day practicing. In my opinion, its definitely worth it. I practice for hours every day and I love it so much. Also, some songs you can play by only knowing basic chords, like C, A, G, E, and D. You should be able to learn a simple song well in the first week if you keep at it. (Your fingers hurt a lot at first, especially if you’re playing a steel string).
Every person learns at a different rate. Most will learn in less than a week or can take up to a month . Well that depends on how well you practice and how long you practice. You can find free lessons at ultimate-guitar.com. They really helped me. If you want to learn fast. You might want to dedicate your free time learning and practicing guitar, listening to music . You might also use tablatures so can learn a song quickly. You find exercises that will quickly increase your finger strength from the said site. Here’s a tip, if you wan’t to learn fast practice everything slowly. This makes the learning process much faster. You should use a light gauge of strings when playing a guitar(a thinner set of strings),they will give you lots of pain after practicing for a while, but u should develope calluses after maybe 2 or 3 days, it will make playing the guitar less painfull and you’ll be able to practice longer.
And by the way its worth learning.
And 0ne m0re thing, ull lern faster wid a teacher, i think. . .i nvr had one. .
Rock on!!!
or something . .haha
It really depends on three things, first your ability to learn the guitar, how much effort you put in it, and what exactly you want to play. If you want to play something very complicated, you will be in the process for years. If you want to learn quick but want to rock ass, you should play punk from the 80s. The reason is because they often have very simple chords that even a beginner can learn quickly. Look into Misfits songs. I was a month into learning the guitar by the time I was able to play 4 Misfits songs- Static Age, Some Kinda Hate, We Are 138, and Hollywood Babylon. Now I can play almost their whole discography, and I’m 5 months in. If you want to play something within a month, go on ultimateguitar.com and look up Misfits tabs. They are simple to play but rock ass. This is an easy way to learn to play the guitar.
People spend their entire lives learning to play an instrument…
but in terms of learning a few songs, because you have such a strong background in music already, you’ll likely pick up guitar pretty quickly. Once you learn a few chords, you can play a huge amount of songs. So go for it sista!
its completely up to how much you practice, your style of music and most importantly: if you like it!! i learnt guitar and absolutely loved it. if you don’t like it, well, don’t do it!! success is 98% attitude and 2% knowledge. i’ve spent my whole childhood playing guitar/bass, it’s worth it to just learn a few things on guitar but it takes years to master all the different techniques and modes and scales and chords (i could go on all day). i’d say just go for simple songs first ‘cos everyones impressed just playing out a piece like G&R.
ok first you go to a few lessons and start to learn i few riffs and songs and a simple technique. a lot of people will stop here and its fine if you do but you’ll never be a pro guitarist. next if you want to you’ll learn kinda theory stuff, techniques etc. you’ll progress slowly/medium for a few years, then suddenly it will all come together and you’ll shoot forward (no not overnightbut in a month or two you’ll be so much better. after that its slow going towards the pro musician. but if one thing gets stuck, whether it’s your finger speed or what you’ll stay at step one (jamming out G&R riffs).
hmm….everyone does learn at a different rate but if you learn fast……then with the right sources you’ll be able to play some pretty good stuff within 3 months. i dont know what kind of music you want to play but i learned all of stairway to heaven, crazy train , and i made a song that sounded great on the acoustic all in under 3 months. BUT…..playing guitar, was literally all i did for those 3 months. I’m a quick learner myself because im persistent with it. You could probably learn to play a third of the Offspring’s songs in a matter of 4 days if you’re persistent with it, because its all mostly power chords as is most punk/pop punk music. this is also something that will help you pick up your knowledge of the guitar really fast if you study it.
its a list of all of the notes on the fret board. DO NOT LEARN SCALES. learn this, its all of the scale put together, but by learning this, and not just all of the scales at different times, you will learn EXACTLY where every note is on the guitar. To find A-minor on that chart you just look between A and B. Also…..if you are not willing to suck up every bit of information you can get and study hard at it you will never become a good guitarist and you’ll be stuck with power chords for the rest of your life. Trust me, its a lot of work at first, but once you get going with it you dont want to stop. if you have any more questions you can e-mail me at
