Can I learn violin by myself?
Rik N asked:
Did anyone learn violin by themselves? If so, how many months you get used to it. I play the piano and someone said it is advantageous coz I have background of music and that when I play violin, it would be easier for me. Any advice can you give please! Can I learn the 2 instruments at the same time. As for piano, just a little improvement!

If you want to learn violin BY yourself, plan on only playing FOR yourself – hopefully, in a soundproof room. Get a teacher – unless you wan to sound awful for a long time, have things that do not WORK, get sore muscles, hand cramps, and basically quit in disgust. First your cat will leave the room – then your DOG will leave – then your FAMILY will leave.
What do mean about piano, just a little improvement???
well, i learned how to play some pieces on the violin by myself, and i spent a day learning where all the music notes go. if u can already read music and u have a piano to relate to the pitch of the note, i don’t see why you cant learn on your own? and yes, you can learn 2 instruments at a time, i had 4 instruments going at the one time when i was 12. all u need is patience.
hope i helped
Of course you can!

The experience from playing the piano does have a good advantage to it. As my dad puts it, “if you can play the piano, you can play just about anything else”. The piano would serve well with getting in tune, and the ability to read notes will also help a lot. Just get a lesson book, and you’re good to go!
I taught myself to play the saxophone by using my dad’s alto and my sister’s 6th grade lesson book, and in under a year, I was able to use it in marching band, so I’m sure you can do just as well on your violin (well, not get into marching band….O.o Lol, you get what I mean.)
I also did the same for piano, just finding random music on the internet or from my dad’s old books, and eventually training myself to try harder music and remember what I did to get over the last “hard” piece.
As for learning two instruments at the same time, I did that with my clarinet and piano for a while, and eventually the saxophone and piano. It just takes a lot of patience, perseverance, and practice, but I think it’s very worth it in the end, when you can play for family and friends!
Hope I was of any help. XD
I play the viola, and I don’t think that you can learn the violin yourself. String instruments, like any instrument require a lot of skill, but it’s sort of a whole different level. Everything is very precise, that if you start playing the wrong way, it will be very hard to break that habit. Take it from someone who has been down that road.
The person who said that you have an advantageous, because you play the piano is definitely correct. I play the piano, and I believe that having some type of background knowledge in music helped me with learning the viola. However, I still think a teacher would be beneficial.
Although, if you are stuck in your ways, and absolutely do not want a violin teacher I would get a book and some sort of DVD instructional on how to play. You need to be able to see someone playing, and see their techniques to really become good at the violin.
Please feel free to email me if you have anymore questions, because I would definitely love to help. Good luck learning the violin, I think you will enjoy it. String instruments have a beautiful sound.
Once again, good luck and ENJOY!!
EDIT: No disrespect to the third answer, but she has never played a string instrument. Their are so many little techniques that it is impossible to learn it on your own. Yes, you know the basics, but their are things that a teacher can show you, and demonstrate for you that a book or DVD really just can’t.
Here is a question i just answered that may help you out.
