thalia c asked:

i made it my new years resolution to play the violin. ive always loved the violin, but its only now that ive gotten the courage to go through with it (i say that because everyone always scares me off by saying ts too difficult). is it really that hard? im 20 years old, and i keep hearing you need to start from a young age….

also, wat are some good quality Violins for beginners? ive looked on ebay but it feels like they are too cheap to be good.

It depends on how good you are with strings and if you are a quick learner.

Yeah its not hard you just need to practice. I bought mine for 100 dollars and its really really good. But also its a small so yeah.

if you have a natural talent it won’t be so hard. if you don’t that is okay but i am sure you can get the hang of it.

If you’re just starting out, take an experienced player with you to a store to help you pick out an instrument that is quality. You don’t need a pro model, but you don’t want cheap instruments that will fall apart. My personal rule when buying instruments: Only buy it if you can return it. Ebay doesn’t usually have that option. A cheap instrument may end up being just that… cheap. And then you’ve not saved money, you’ve lost it.

Ok, playing violin is a challenge. I’m an orchestra director, but I didn’t begin playing violin until I was in college. And I already had lots of music background. And yes, it was a challenge, indeed.

The first challenging part is intonation… you’ve heard beginning violin players. Not a pleasant sound! Some of that is because they are out of tune. The other part is that their bowing technique has not been developed. You can’t have good tone without good intonation. The key is listening… if it doesn’t sound right, it probably isn’t, so adjust your finger that is on the fingerboard up or down until it sounds right.

Remember, there is no substitute for practice. It will take work!! Don’t give up. On those days when you just think you sound horrible, and you probably do (even I have those days!), keep going!! You will get better, it just takes time. There’s no magic. Just practice.

    Hope this helps!!

    Best wishes.

I started the violin at age 23, and started playing with the state symphony 2 years later. It’s certainly not impossible. You won’t be a virtuoso (probably) but there’s nothing to stop you from being pretty good. That’s all I would have called myself.

Don’t buy a ebay violin! Rent first. You can rent a much nicer violin than you’re probably prepared to buy. Make sure you like it, that you’ll stick with it, and learn a bit about how a violin should sound and handle before buying one. And don’t buy one without playing it first. Great violins and crappy violins can all look the same. Make sure you can have a trial period – some sites will do that, like this one . I got my violin from them after renting for 6 months, and I’m very happy with it.

    And get a teacher!

It is difficult, but it’s very worthwhile. And stay away from Ebay and their “violin shaped objects.” Here is a good starting violin:

No, it’s not that hard. If you already know how to play a instrument, it’s really easy. I got my violin off of Amazon. It was $100 and it’s a good violin. Some that you rent are $500 and they are not very good.
