What Is the Right Age to Start Violin Lessons?

Mike L asked:

My wife and & I are considering violin lessons for my 6 year old daughter. Is she too young to start playing? I began playing piano at 5 and hated it…6 years later, I was a mediocre piano player who still hated it.

Yes, start her as early as possible. She may prefer a 3/4 size violin.

or as soon as the kid can stand up

6 is fine, but look for either a 1/2 or 1/4 size violin (good rental store will fit her properly) that sounds good.
Most important is her teacher. If she does not like the teacher she will not like the violin, unless she is one of those people who fall in love with music.

There are many good teachers who specialize in young children, so if your first does not work out, go elsewhere. It will be worth it.

My friend Clarissa and her sister started at age 4 I believe. And they’re amazing. 6 is definetly not too young.
