Which One Is Easier to Learn, Violin or Piano (Only Answer if You Play One of Them)?
!SRN! asked:
So, I can already play the drums, and some of the guitar. I want to learn how to play either the violin or piano. I heard learning the piano is very boring. I want to learn both, but I would want to learn the easiest one first, and then learn the harder one. Which one was easier for you?

If we only play one of them, how can we give you a comparison?
Anyway, they are both difficult but since you already play a string instrument why not try the violin.
hi!
i play the violin. i have been for about 6 years with 5 years of private lessons. i’ve gotten pretty good i guess. it takes a lot of patience to learn both instruments. violin, i started when i was so young that i don’t remember much, but im technically still learning and fixing bad habits. it takes such patience to get everything correct.
BUT! now that i play the violin, i was able to teach myself how to play so many other instruments. everything else is easier now. in the beging of summer last year, i decided i really wanted to play the piano, and i took it up in about a week because it was so easy for me. the thing i have trouble with is the fingerings on the piano because i haven’t had a single lesson. i suggest learning both instruments though. just if you have a lot of patience take up the piano first…violin would probably help with posture though.
so im going to say piano is easier to begin with, but way more boring playing really small songs.
i would say start with piano because you will learn to read both clefs better and then when you feel ready, you can move on to the violin. take private lessons for both instruments though. don’t self teach because you obtain so many bad habits (trust me ;) )
good luck! and be very patient because you probably will not get it right off the bat
=D
My advice would be to just stick with guitar until you get really good.
I’ve played the piano for about 4 years and I’m going to take the level 9 CM test this march, but i have a lot of friends who play the violin. In my opinion, the piano is easier to learn than the violin. But to get good at either it takes thousands, and i literally mean thousands of hours of hard, dedicated practice (and a good private teacher would be helpful too.)
I would rather play the piano than the violin because a lot of households have pianos but not violins, so you could show off your piano skills without bringing anything around with you.
I play both. I would say it’s easier to begin in piano because as long as you press the right notes, it sounds fine. But you have to have good sound in violin. You can be “off-key” a lot easier & get a screeching sound most of the time. It’s a lot easier to sound “good” and not get frustrated when you first play piano.
But in advanced piano, both hands have to play & often each hand plays 3 or 4 notes. There’s a many more registers so you have to learn way more notes. You also have to pedal at the same time. So it’s harder to be advanced.
I’d say for a guitarist, it would be easier to learn violin next because of they’re both string instruments.
I take piano lessons, and it’s pretty easy, violin is hard, not either that. paino is pretty exicting and fun!
Its what ever works for you.
But keep in mind, in learning the piano, you have to be able do deal with the polyphony. Which is suuper difficult at first. I even still have troube with it at times. And timing with both hands and reading both clefts.
AND…
the violin is hard to keep a good sound. and its very very like technical. You should learn the basics of both and find one youd like it more to stick it out with untill you get good. for me it was the piano. I never even played a violin but i really really like it and like to, well study it in a way. I want to now lol.
Piano is more straightforward to understand. Personally, I find the violin a lot easier, but I seem to be the exception rather than the rule.
I found the violin much more difficult to learn, although you might have an advantage because you play the guitar. It’s not always easy for people to grasp the two entirely different hand motions that are involved in playing a violin.
As for the piano, I don’t know how anyone could ever call studying the piano boring. You can play across the entire spectrum of music, any style that you want. And it’s always available to just sit down and jam.
I adore the violin, but it’s hard for me to play… I play the piano (I’m gifted with music, I can hear a song just once then walk over to a piano and play it… no joke!) and I love it! I play by both ear and notes. I choose to learn piano first then violin then guitar, the piano is the the basics of all music, good dancers learn ballet first just as good horsemen learn dressage first. It teaches you the discipline and too be one with the music, I sometimes just get lost in playing the piano, like I can feel it from my fingertips to the inner-depths of my soul… ah! sorry for the shakespeare-ish moment… Anyways learn the piano first, it will extremely pay off in the long run.
The violin is harder to play than the piano.
I play the piano only, but speaking from my musical knowledge, the violin is extremely hard to play WELL.
When I say its hard to play well, I mean that… you need to be of a relatively high level to even sound remotely good. I know a few people who are on around grade 6 for violin. They no doubt practice loads and have sufficient experience, but their playing still kinda makes me cringe.
Piano on the other hand, you can easily sound great on it. Learning the theory part is tedious but once you get it, you’re set. Violin theory is tedious too. They’re all tedious. But playing the piano is a whole another experience; its lovely.
Having said that, I regret not learning the violin. It’s good to have a small instrument you can carry around on trips and stuff; its handy for practice and relaxation. The violin is the perfect size to carry around. Not too sure about a grand piano :P
