How Does an Absolute Beginner Like Me Go About Learning the Correct Way to Play the Violin by Myself?
Is there any cheap (under $30) violin lessons/teachers in the General Toronto Area?
or
Are there any good online videos, websites, and books that can teach me the very basics of good technique for holding, playing, and taking care of a violin so that I don’t kill myself using it?
I want to learn to play the violin by myself, on my own terms. I play the piano, and it was mostly self-taught, so I figured that the violin would be a matter of picking it up and fiddling around until I got somewhere with it (like the paino).
From the yahoo!answers I just looked at I’ve gathered that if I teach myself to play violin I’ll learn bad habits, horrific technique, not master anything more than scales and possibly demolish my wrists in the process. I don’t doubt that; however, I don’t have money for $30-a-lesson classes (All the money went to the violin I just bought today).
I don’t want to spend money on teachers if I don’t have to. I’m a very self-sufficiant person and I don’t want this to become an activity that requires I go out of my way to pay money and see someone to teach me something I’m very willing to put in the time and effort to learn all by myself.

Try to check the library and see if they have any videos about playing. This would be the cheapest… If not then you can buy a video that helps show you the basic techniques. I would suggest something that comes with a CD that show you what you should be sounding like. That would probably be the best thing.
Ask a friend or acquaintance who knows how to play very well. Some
students are very good.
