H. Hoffer Violin?

Frank B asked:

I am taking violin lessons and I bought an H. Hoffer violin and so far the violin itself has proven to be better than my friends but I’ve been through a few bows now so I wanted to know if anyone has heard of this brand and if it is a good or bad brand. I’ve searched for it but there doesn’t seem to be much info on it.

I cant speak to the particular brand, but many luthiers and some online stores will let you take the bow home for a week ro two on trial. Got one on loan if you like it buy it, if not send it back.

Can you be more specific when you say “I’ve been through a few bows now”? Does that mean they broke? If so, how? Did all of the hairs pop out? Did the stick break or warp? Did you replace it each time with another Hoffner bow? Do you have a wood bow, or fiberglass? Approximately how much did you spend on the bows?

The same name might appear on any number of different bows in widely varying price ranges, so this information would be significant. I have never heard of there being a specific problem with bows that come with Hoffner violins, so I am curious as to the specifics of how they met there demise. At that point perhaps I could advise you further.
