no one can give you an answer to such an unquantifiable question, but i’ll try anyways.

it’ll probably take as many practice hours to master as your trumpet did. at least you have a head start by having previous music experience!

your technical knowledge will come quickly (if you practice) but the physicality and connection between your hands and brain and what’s on the page is going to take a long time to “master.”

    you have notes, not chords.

I commend you on such a wonderful instrument. Before you spend a lot of money on lessons, you may want to try an online instructor. They are much cheaper and it will cost you far far less and you can learn from the privacy and the comfort of your own home. I have listed a website below who is not only a master teacher but a master violinist as well.

The way you learn will determine how long it takes for you personally. Again, you will save more money with an online program and if you excel fast enough or need someone to get you through rough spots then a in person instructor can help you there.

How long it will take to learn to get to orchestra levels will depend on your talent and ability to connect with the instrument. I think you made a good decision to rent one. That way, you can have a feel of a violin without investing in one. You have to be fairly good or be trained to be fairly good pitch wise as the violin requires precision placing of the finger(s) on the string(s) to get the particular note(s). Eventually, you will learn to tune your own violin as well. If you have mastered reading music, congrats, you have a head start. :) Do take note though that there are performance directions that are unique to string instruments.

no, it does not have chords, just notes. it didn’t take a very long time for me and my classmates to learn, like about a few weeks. really easy to play if you know the notes and where they go.
