They can be. My stand partner, who’s first chair is being taught by a violinist. It’s just that when the lessons get more in depth, it’s better to have a violist tutor.

Yes, the technique is the same for both the violin and viola, if you want to get really in depth instruction for the viola though, a viola teacher would be much better because they have much more experience playing the viola.

viola is way different, its like a violinist teaching someone to play cello.
