A friend of mine and me had a discussion on this today. She studies in music and we both agreed that every instrument has different difficulty levels depending on the kind of mastering you want of that instrument. She said violin was hard at first(beginner level), to get the technique down. As you know, violin doesn't have frets like the guitar, so you need a good ear or you'll always be off tone. Then, to become intermediate, she said it was rather easy but later on it got medium hard to master the speed and the precision of the notes.I hope it helps you!
