You can probably get a decent beginner violin outfit (violin, bow, case rosin) for about $300 – $400. Of course, you can spend thousands of dollars on a violin and the same on a really good bow, but you as a beginner really don’t need to make that kind of investment until you know you’re going to stick with it. But spending much less than $300- $400 is going to get you only a cheap, shoddily made, bad-sounding violin-shaped object that will be a waste of money.

Cost for lessons is going to vary considerably depending on how often you take lessons (weekly? every other week? monthly?) and how much typical violin teachers in your geographical area charge. Lets’ say $40 per hour. Then if you take a 1-hour lesson every week for 1 year, that would be $40 x 52 weeks = $2,080 a year. If you take a lesson only once every 2 weeks that would be half as much, or $1,040 a year.

Cost of sheet music: your teacher will probably start you off on a series of “method” or music learning books. How many books you get through in a year will depend on how talented you are and how much you practice. Lets say you work your way through 3 books in a year — figure $20 per book, plus a few extra $$ for some additional sheet music to keep you from getting bored with the material in the books — figure $100 for sheet music in the first year.

    So, total:

$400 for the violin, bow, case, etc
$2,080 for weekly lessons or $1,040 for bi-weekly lessons
    $100 for sheet music

If you take weekly lessons for a year, I’d estimate a total of $2,580, or for lessons every other week, estimate $1,540 for the first year.

Lessons from a Philharmonic Member in Indiana $40 (Fort Wayne, IN) to over $100 (indianapolis) cheaper in the music stores and colleges. Suzuki group and private lessons are charged by the month.

Sheet music, theory, technique and bowing pattern books for 2 years lesson material ( $75 to $150) depending on level and how fast you progress.

Bow, $100 to $3,000 and more.

Violin $60 (junk) $750 (new from Shar.com) and $6,000 for the one we have (Mittenvald) I believe. (spelling may be wrong.)

Go to Shar.com and shop around. They have lots of nice stuff.

I would highly recommend you getting a private teacher with at least a BS in music from a recognized music college, and who has extensive experience, and a person who will encourage you through the roughest first 3 years of learning. Check with your local professional symphonic orchestra.
