Would Like to Learn How to Play the Violin, Need Some Tips?
So I’m 19, and completely new to the world of classical music. Nevertheless, I’d like to learn to play the violin. What I need is: learn how to read notes, buy a violin, and learn to play it (of course).
But I’m afraid that I’m just too old and ignorant to learn to play.

1) Is it ok to buy a really cheap (low quality) violin just to learn how to play and then buy a better one once I’ve gotten better?
2) Is it a problem that I can’t read notes yet? Will they teach me at whatever school I go to? Or can I “homeschool” myself?

your 19. not to old.
i want to learn as well. but i can’t help you.. sorry :/
You’re never too old.
It’s a good idea to buy a cheap violin first because if you buy an expensive one, you might find you don’t take to it and you wasted your money! I don’t mean something that costs £10 though. 20 years ago we bought our son a violin for about £200 and that lasted him for maybe a year. Once we knew he’d taken to it, we splashed out and spent about £1400. (Plus £200 for the bow). It does make a big difference when you can play a bit and you have a good instrument, but in the beginning it doesn’t matter so much.
If you want to play some decent music, you really need to take some lessons in learning how to read music.
The more work you put in, the better the result you will get!
I’m 13 and I’ve been playing the violin for 3 years, I think if you really pushed yourself, you could do it. I am not the best (yet) but I am getting there, within 3 or 4 more years of school learning I think I can do it. Although when I was ten my mom bought me a violin at about $150 and it was pretty crappy now that I think of it, but when I got it I could barely tell the difference between a good and a bad violin, so I guess you could buy a low quality violin and get a higher quality one later. I had to teach my self until I turned 11, and it wasn’t that hard. If you need any help, feel free to contact me :D I’d love to help you, I taught my cousin how to play. :]
XOXO,
Sarah xD
You can learn the violin (or any other instrument for that matter) at any age, as long as you are willing to practice. The first instrument you want to ever get is a low quality instrument, because then if you break it, it isn’t $10,000 down the drain. In fact, I would suggest renting an instrument first, to see if you really want to continue with playing it. There are plenty of music theory books, instrument self help books that you can use to learn to read music, but I would highly suggest a private teacher, so that, in addition to learning to read music, you can start to hear when you are in or out of tune. But another ting I would suggest is an Italian-English dictionary, because most instructions written on the page in words are going to be in Italian. One last thing that I must tell you though, is the violin isn’t just classical, but it can really rock out. Or you can fiddle around with it. I’ll stop my word play now, but you get the general idea; just because it’s a violin doesn’t mean you have to play classical music. But first get trained classically so you know what is right and what is wrong.
