Review by Scott E. Peterman for Baroque Violin Sonatas

This is a 2 CD set in which the performances on disc one were monaurally recorded back in the 1950′s; disc two’s performances are in stereo and were recorded in the 1970′s. I purchased the LP version of disc 2 back in the 1980′s and fell in love with it. This CD set was released in 2007, and for the sonatas on disc 2, this in their first international release on CD. The recorded sound is superb and the performances of these beautiful baroque sonatas are “modernized” by the performers; no harpsichords or baroque violins here. Grumiaux performs as only he can with fine accompaniment by Castagnone and Hajdu. The result is performances of arresting beauty that immediately grab your attention and don’t let go. Get this set while you can.

Grumiaux’s elegant playing shines through this 2-CD set of Baroque gems from Australia Eloquence. Some of the sonatas featured here are released internationally for the first time. For those looking for his recording of the complete Corelli Op.5 (only La Follia is featured here), you can get the 2-CD set Corelli: 12 Sonatas for Violin and Harpsicord
