I Want to Teach Myself How to Play the Violin?
I was going to ask my parents if i could rent, or buy a violin for my upcoming birthday. I honestly don’t like taking lessons, even though it would be good to have a teacher. I used to take piano lessons, and i was good for awhile. I currently play clarinet in my school’s band…
Would it be easy for me to teach myself how to play violin? Can somebody tell me from experience?

Definitely not. It’s hard to teach yourself any instrument from scratch (except for maybe the piano). You’re positions and the way you hold the instrument may be wrong which turns into a bad habit. It is always hard to get rid of a bad habit which is why I highly recommend taking lessons with a teacher. It can be 30 minutes a week. Trust me, I had really bad holding habits on the cello.. I’m still trying to fight it (after 3 years).
A lot of people try, but it’s very difficult to do and you end up having to unlearn a lot of things. Please see:
How to teach yourself the violin
In my opinion, violin is one of the hardest instruments to master…even with an instructor. There are some “fiddle” players who might claim to be self-taught, but usually they had help from other fiddlers.
There is much more skill involved in mastering violin than with most other instruments. There’s a lot more to it than just learning the notes. Because it’s fretless, it’s a challenge just to find the notes. On the piano, there was a key for every note, right? On a guitar, there’s frets and on your clarinet there’s buttons. With violin there’s no frets or buttons or keys. There is just as much going on with the bow hand…proper wrist control and things like that are essential. It’s much easier to learn correctly than to have to unlearn bad habits.
I think you need to have an instructor, at least to get you pointed in the right direction. Once you’ve been shown some of the basics, you may or may not want to try it alone. I don’t know why you don’t like lessons…maybe you need a better teacher?
