Can I Start Playing the Violin?
I’m 15 years old. I played the piano for 8 years (my mom made me)
but I really want to start a new and challenging instrument. I plan to work very hard, and I love violin music.
Do you think I should get lessons?

yes it costs lot of money
it makes your hands burn and cramp
and gives you blisters
If you want to, why not? What’s stopping you? If you’ve played the piano for eight years then you’ve played music before and you’ve got a way better start than someone who’s never played an instrument. You can now take up an instrument that you like better than the piano.
i’m in my freshman year of high. i have played piano for 9 years, and have started violin 9 weeks ago. it comes really easy if you’ve played piano for that long. all you need to know is the basics and you can go far really fast because you already ahve the musical background. today was my 8th lesson. i’m already almost done with suzuki book one. GO FOR IT
I think you should. You’ll probably have to get private lessons, as most schools require you to have experience on your instrument before joining. But since you play piano already, they may let join the orchestra, which would be great, since you’d be playing every day. You should check with your school.
Yes, of course! My mum started at forty! Definitely get lessons! Its always worth trying new things, and young people are so rarely enthusiastic about classical music (as a young person myself). I’m going to say play the viola because its bigger, has a deeper more mellow and cello-y sound, plus you’ll get into orchestras with ease because its a minority instrument, but its entirely up to you! I just do my bit for promoting the viola.
Furthermore, see if you can rent an instrument first, and once you’re showing basic promise, and are sure you like it, apply to a loan scheme such as Benslow (UK only. Your skill on the piano will mean you will be considered a promising young musician and can likely get a very high quality violin to keep until you’re twenty five, for less than £75 a year for an instrument of a minimum £1500 value.
It’s how I got my viola (after ten years of playing violin!) I was incompetent on the viola, but was grade seven violin, so it didn’t matter!
The same went for a guitarist I know who picked viola up very fast!
So overall, go for it, but be prepared for blisters, and the sounds of a slightly dead cat for a while! The string family are notoriously difficult in their early stages but its worth it!
