‘Many Meetings’ on Viola

Here Virgil plays ‘Many Meetings’ from the Lord of the Rings score, on viola. It’s not the best, but an honorable attempt. If you are a musician, and would like to offer critique, please do.

@mobieboy This video is about three years old now — I’m currently a much better violist (currently working on the Reger Viola Suite in G Minor). I’d be interested in looking at your LotR arrangement, though — that’s quite an accomplishment!

yo bro, u gotta practice, that was pretty terrible… ive been playing viola since i was 5 and im now 21, and arragned the whole lord of the rings trilogy on viola. i could help ya if ud like

  • jimmihshs:

    He was using vibrato.

  • kevmr1:

You need to raise the stand and hold your head up straighter. Use more of the bow, and keep it centered on the strings and not all over the neck. Dont press so hard, play lightly and more naturally.

  • DirtboySlim:

Love this song and i love to play it. Is it just me or he shaking alot, but other than that good.

  • amenlu:

you have to use more of your bow, you only use the middle part, let the frog appear

  • moose51789:

woohoo, there are violists out there. I have this sing as well and love to play it, like others have said its not bad, slow down on the vibrato a bit and it will sound much more graceful.

  • sakuraofbase:

that wasnt bad. i play the viola myself and im happy theres a violist out there to but a video up. you played good, but slow it down with your vibrato and it might help if you slowed your bow a bit. but great sound! something that took me awhile to have. you have confidence and put your feeling into it. keep it up!

  • choobz92:

    WELL DONE!!

  • tnybubles:

i play this on violin, and i think it could be a bit more “graceful” if you will, and somewhat slower. But you played without any note-flaw, so great job on that!

Sounds like overusing vibrato. The only time you’re not using it is with the open strings. Or i might be mistaken…

  • ELibrisVirgi:

I’ve now been playing four years, and have improved a fair amount since this video. Thanks for your complements and critiques!

  • nerdyviolist:

I’m a violist, and I’m playing a version of this piece right now. I couldn’t find any violas playing it, then lo and behold, you popped up! For critique, I’d say pull your bow in closer to the bridge, and try not to shake your viola when you vibrato. It’s pretty good, though. I like your bow tilt. How long have you been playing?

  • FurubaGirl183:

I’m jealous. I’ve been playing the viola for two years now, and my vibrato doesn’t sound as good as that. :)

  • blachemeil:

you’re vibrato is still a little fast…it’s sort of distracting. I would suggest working on widening it.

  • mhunterjumper:

Your viola has a beautiful tone. I’m a violist myself, and all I have to say is watch some of your flats and slow down your vibrato a bit (it’s annoying how much practice the vibrato takes.) Otherwise it was pretty good! You played confidently, which is excellent, because violas were never meant to played quietly. :) I like your Harry Potter posters too…

  • ELibrisVirgi:

Upon recollection, the only thing I really like in this video is my vibrato… I’m terribly flat. But thanks for your critique.

  • buttercup11882:

very well, you sound flat and i know i play trumpet, trombone, violin, gutar, and drum set. I have worked with this song mixed with “many meetings”, “the great river(a great plus)” and “breaking of the felowship-in dreams” i should make video of me playing it for you.

  • ELibrisVirgi:

Thank you! Your comments have been appreciated.

  • Spyro22475:

I’m not a musician so I wouldn’t know, but it sounded good to me. =P

  • ELibrisVirgi:

Thank you. Your advice will be well-heeded.

  • mjwynne01:

Not bad, you have got a strong tone, just work on your intonation you sound a little flat too me. But other than that your well on your way.
