Anybody Have Advice for a Troubled Student and His Viusal and Performing Arts Curriculum?

I’m a freshman 9th grader that is about to be part of the second class to ever attend The School of Biotechnology. ince the school is pretty new, I’m guessing that they are still experimenting with their students. The school uses some kind of program called the IB program. I have just found out that in this program there is a visual and performing arts curriculum where it asks students to create and perform something within their freshman year (either in dance, music, theater, or visual art). I am definitely not prepared to create or perform anything at all and it’s safe to say i do not have many skills here. I took piano lessons for a few years many years ago, but I have lost all of that knowledge by now and can not even perform the most basic of songs. Also, I bought a bass guitar about a year ago with the intentions of learning to play it, but I have seldom ever even picked up that guitar. Has anybody else ever been in the same situation as me? Any advice? Anything would appreciated
Also, the performance has to be done outside of school… :(

Well, if you’re good on the computer maybe you can do something with digital photography. Thats visual communication. I think that would be your best bet.

Maybe some free verse poetry/spoken word kind of thing would work. You could express whatever you feel deeply about, including your fear and frustration regarding this requirement. It might just fulfill the requirement and be very therapeutic at the same time.

Is there anything that you are passionate about? A movie? A band? An injustice in the world that frustrates you so much that you want to cry every time you see it happen? Someone or something that you know everybody else just doesn’t understand?

Starting with one of your passions would be a great first step.

Here are a few tips about giving presentations:

    – A basic presentation will have a beginning, a middle and an end.

    – No one in the audience knows what you are going to do except for you. If you miss a beat or forget a word, that’s okay, just keep on going, no one will know.

    - You have many more skills than you think you have. If you’ve ever told a joke to your friends, then you’ve got the skills of a public speaker. The only difference is public speakers just talk a little longer before they get to the punch line.

    - One trick actors use to help with stage fright is to pretend the audience doesn’t “get” what they are saying. Like when you are trying to teach something new to a friend and they’re not quite understanding what you are saying. This method helps you to take the focus off of yourself and puts it onto the people you are talking to.

    - Practice your presentation in front of a different groups of people before you do it for your school. This will help you be more comfortable doing it and you can figure out the rough spots that need more work. You can ask any other groups you belong to watch you. Maybe at church, socially or even a group of your parents friends. Perhaps you could start up a rehearsal club at school so everyone can practise. An important thing about getting advice on your perforamnce is to ask people to comment on how you performed, not the content of your performance. The content of your performance is your personal choice and you don’t need anyone to say negative things about it. You do need to know if you spoke too fast, to slow or mumbled.

-If you google “Toastmasters” you can find websites that give you some information and tips on public speaking.

    - Remember, you don’t have to have the “perfect” performance, you just have to get up there and share what you want to say with the world!

    - One last thing, I think you’re miles ahead already just for asking for help! You’re going to do a great job!

Have fun with this and break a leg!
