How Long Does It Take to Learn to Play the Flute?
curlygirl asked:
I know it is easy to pick up other instruments once you already play one. I have been playing the clarinet since was in middle school. I have also played the violin, french horn, and a little piano. That said, i read music well, but am learning a whole new instrument. How long did it take you to pick up a second or third instrument and play it well?

When I say play well, I mean, enough to play a solo or confidently say that I play (not play at) the instrument.

breath control/finger coordination will take a couple of years for a beginner with no musical experience. to master the flute takes a lifetime.
It took me a little over a year to learn how to play the flute fairly well.
I learned to play the clarinet in elementary school and went on to play the flute in seventh grade. I’ve been playing for eight years now. I picked up the piccolo and I played all the solos in my high school band.
I wouldn’t say it’s hard to learn if you consistently practice, but it’s not something you’ll master in less than a year. I found that breath control was easy to maintain. However all the fingerings took years to master, and I use that term lightly. Practicing scales, especially the chromatic scale help a lot. I recommend playing the chromatic scale up and down the octaves. That way you cover all the fingerings and you get comfortable using them That’s how I learned.
Good Luck!
It really depends on how much time you spend practising it. But from what I understand, you already play clarinet and the french horn and have a good understanding in music in general. I think it would take you around 2-3 years to be able to pass grade 5.
I know this from experience. I learnt violin for 1 year and after I changed into learning cello, it only took me 3 years and pass with destinction in grade 7.
Good luck with your flute.
Well of course, while some instruments may be similar, it is still an entirely new instrument. I’ve played the flute for 8 years now, and tried clarinet a few years ago. Some of the fingerings are similar for both instruments, but most of them are really different and that might take awhile to get used to. While you can read music well, the way you blow and your embrochure is really different. If you practice regularily, it may take a few years. It will really help if you can get a good private teacher. Of course it also depends on how well you mean “well,” and what difficulty of solo you would want to play.
