Would like to learn how to play the violin, need some tips?

Thursday, January 14th, 2010
So I’m 19, and completely new to the world of classical music. Nevertheless, I’d like to learn to play the violin. What I need is: learn how to read notes, buy a violin, and learn to play it (of course).
But I’m afraid that I’m just too old and ignorant to learn to play.

1) Is it ok to buy a really cheap (low quality) violin just to learn how to play and then buy a better one once I’ve gotten better?
2) Is it a problem that I can’t read notes yet? Will they teach me at whatever school I go to? Or can I “homeschool” myself?

How do I go by getting started with playing the violin?

Friday, January 8th, 2010
I am 22 and I’ve always wanted to play the violin. I have been playing the guitar for several years now (so I know a few things about music) but I have never even touched or picked up a violin in my life. I am looking for a good, affordable beginner’s violin that is geared more towards classical music rather than fiddle music. I noticed that there are several different sizes as well. I have smaller-than-average hands with slim fingers. Should I get a smaller size? should I take violin lessons? is it possible at
all to be self-taught with the violin?

Violin Learning Questions?

Tuesday, September 29th, 2009
Polo asked:

I’m 22 and played the trumpet from 6th to 12th grade. I can also play the guitar and have developed an interest in the violin. I have a love for classical music and the emotion invoking power of string instruments so I’m considering giving the violin a try. How difficult do you think it would be for me to take up the violin? About how long would it take (estimate of course) for me to be able to play the simple pieces I love with a beautiful tone?

Also, if I were to being playing what brand and type of violin would be best to start with? I don’t think I could take private lessons due to my busy work schedule, so i was planning on self-teaching myself using online guides and instruction books. Would anyone have any recommendations for such sources?

Overall, do you think I have a good shot at becoming a good player?

Thanks for all your help!

Is the violin easy for a guitarist to play?

Thursday, September 10th, 2009
Jeff asked:

I’ve been playing the guitar for about 6 years now and well, I think I’m pretty good, I’m mostly into neo-classical music like Yngwie Malmsteen so I’d like to learn to play the violin.

Is the violin pretty easy to learn and get used to really quick after playing the guitar for a while?

Also, what kind of violin should I get? I know I would have to spend a few hundred for a good violin, but I’m just looking for something cheap (under $100) to learn on first and see if I like it. Should I look in music stores for a cheap violin or should I just shop online?
