Question by Squared: Staccato help (violin bowing)?
So.. i know in “spiccato” the bow is supposed to “bounce lightly on the string”.. for staccato, does the bow leave the string as well? (I mean how do they play it so fast) or does the bow stay firm on the string
.. is it a wrist or finger or arm movement? (or all?.. what should be stiff, what loose?) Webpage with images would be best.. videos are OK (as long as not youtube..).

staccato is a word that means a short articulation on any instrument.

spiccato is a specific technique on bowed string instruments. so you can use spiccato to play staccato on the violin. but you can also play staccato “on the string”. one way is a fast bow in the upper half with energy at the attack and relaxations between the notes.

I’m currently trying to find these tabs, but have had no luck online,

“Mustang Sally” by Buddy guy
“Stand by me” by John Lennon

Anyone have any suggestions? if there’s sheet music available that would be a tremendous help as well.

Question by vballcutie: Playing violin at a wedding…? Need help??!?
So my friend’s mom’s friend is getting married and her violinist cancelled. They are looking for a new violinist and my friend’s mom suggested to ask me. I would only be playing at the dinner and she said to play “dinner music”. I’m not exactly sure what that is an I’m not exactly sure how much to charge. any body know how much I should charge? And does anybody know any music I should play? I’d be playing for 3 hours

Ugh…I used to do this, and it was a pain in the butt, because you can’t really repeat music if the guests are all there the entire time. They key is to find music that is easy for you, so you don’t have to do a ton of prep. Also, nothing too bombastic…you want stuff that will blend into the the background. Are you playing by yourself? If so, try some of these:

Ok, Im on my way. I have great hand eye cordination. I play the keyboard and im in a band. I was just wondering if i could take up Guitar. Heres my skills { band wise }

1. Great hand eye coordination
2. Tap my foot and find the beat to every song
3. Do not read music, I memorise the sounds.
4. Played the violin for 2 years
My weaknesses in music
1. Arms get tired after 10 minutes
2. Never attempted to try to play anything like that
3. Dont know any guitar “parts” except wammy bar
4. If there is to many different notes, I will garruntee i will mess up
My questions…
Would I be capable to be a good guitar player?
What are some basic things to know?
Im a fast learner, so, how long did it take U to do it?

In my family, we have several violins. One of them has a very undetailed tag… and I can’t find any info online. It’s definitely pre-1950, and was purchased in New Jersey. It looks older than 1950. French bridge, 2 piece back board, 3/4 size, dark brown, very, very pretty, but scratched.
Does “Merson Violin” ring a bell?
The exact writing on the tag:
“MERSON VIOLIN
Adjusted to menc specifications for perfect performance
[Stamp that says "Model Symphonie"-- or something like that-- it's faded]
Serial no. 4390
Merson
Musical Prods. Corp.
New York 11, N.Y.”

Merson Musical Products was an instrument importer. Mostly guitars. Merged with Univox in the 60s.

… really don’t know what your violin is worth, it was probably a student instrument imported from Germany.
