How does an absolute beginner like me go about learning the correct way to play the violin by myself?

alancumming3 asked:

Is there any cheap (under $30) violin lessons/teachers in the General Toronto Area?
or
Are there any good online videos, websites, and books that can teach me the very basics of good technique for holding, playing, and taking care of a violin so that I don’t kill myself using it?

I want to learn to play the violin by myself, on my own terms. I play the piano, and it was mostly self-taught, so I figured that the violin would be a matter of picking it up and fiddling around until I got somewhere with it (like the paino).

From the yahoo!answers I just looked at I’ve gathered that if I teach myself to play violin I’ll learn bad habits, horrific technique, not master anything more than scales and possibly demolish my wrists in the process. I don’t doubt that; however, I don’t have money for $30-a-lesson classes (All the money went to the violin I just bought today).

I don’t want to spend money on teachers if I don’t have to. I’m a very self-sufficiant person and I don’t want this to become an activity that requires I go out of my way to pay money and see someone to teach me something I’m very willing to put in the time and effort to learn all by myself.

Which one is easier to learn, violin or piano (only answer if you play one of them)?

!SRN! asked:

So, I can already play the drums, and some of the guitar. I want to learn how to play either the violin or piano. I heard learning the piano is very boring. I want to learn both, but I would want to learn the easiest one first, and then learn the harder one. Which one was easier for you?

Can I learn violin by myself?

Rik N asked:

Did anyone learn violin by themselves? If so, how many months you get used to it. I play the piano and someone said it is advantageous coz I have background of music and that when I play violin, it would be easier for me. Any advice can you give please! Can I learn the 2 instruments at the same time. As for piano, just a little improvement!

But,I was wondering, maybe I should learn the piano?
