Q&A: Viola or Violin Players How Can I Make My Vibrato Better?
Question by ockfoot: viola or violin players how can I make my vibrato better?
And how long will it take? I played viola from age 7-18 and it seems ok ( but with public school, I probably wouldn’t have known haha) I was always 1st chair. Now after many years in the medical field I’ve taken it up again for fun, but no classical and because there are more “fiddles” than classical groups I’ve switched to violin. My vibrato, it seems to be an “arm ” vibrado, I know ,I know seems way to fast and not to have the pretty effect it used to have. Please help? And how long did it take you to be good if you practice 20 minutes a day? Sorry I can’t do much more, I have a day job and kid. :) Thanks!
Laniebs, do you think that it is because I learned first on viola from 7-18 and only started violin 3 years ago after a looong break? At first with violin I felt like I was playing on a toy? But a pretty toy. The viola takes a lot more pressure (I think) and vibrato might be different and the spacing of fingers different?
Thanks!

Continuous Violin Vibrato (Vibrato Pt. 5)
The solo at the beginning is from Beim Schlafengehn, from Strauss’ Four Last Songs. My vibrato is rusty due to a long hiatus (injury, early music, fiddle – all senza vibrato) so I’m attempting to work it back up… and in the process I thought of one more subject I could cover. My best wishes to everyone.
